Subquestions
What is the difference between food loss and food waste: Food loss typically takes place at the production, storage, processing and distribution stages in the food value chain. Food waste refers to food that is of good quality and fit for consumption, but doesn't get consumed because it is discarded.
What are the effects of food waste on climate change: When we waste food, we also waste the energy, the water it takes to grow, harvest, transport and the packages. 30% of food is wasted globally across the supply chain, contributing 8 percent of total global greenhouse gas emissions.
It turns out reducing food waste is one of the most important things we can do to reverse global warming. Most of the food waste ends up in dumpsites and landfills. When organic waste decomposes, carbon dioxide and methane gas is created. Both carbon dioxide and methane are greenhouse gases, which contribute to global warming and climate change. |
How can food waste be prevented/reduced in a supermarket/local grocery shop: Supermarkets or local grocery shops could place the food that is needed such as bread and fruit at one place, so people first buy the food they need and after that the tasty food such as chocolate or candy. Food that is close to its expired state should be cheaper so more people would buy it, reducing the chances of it being thrown away.
Our diaries conclusion,
The rating of each of the 9 tips our group gave was:
1. Start small - 3, it is helpful but not the best.
2. Leave nothing behind - 2, Useful, as most people throw away their leftovers.
3. Buy only what you need - 1, Very useful as we mostly buy to much in stores and end up with more then we actually need.
4. Don’t be prejudiced - 1, Excellent because we mostly judge fruits or vegetables from their shape but not their taste nor quality.
5. Check your fridge - 1, We already do this, but this is a must-need for storing food for long periods.
6. First in, first out - 4, Useful for products like vegetables, fruit or bread, but not for canned goods or products that last long.
7. Understand dates - 5, We already understand dates, but they are not helpful at all.
8. Compost - 5, We all already have a compost bin, so this is not helpful.
9. Donate the surplus - 2, Very helpful.
-(We all agreed how helpful/not helpful these tips are)
(1= Excellent, 5= Weak)

Part 2: Research Conclusion
How can we reduce food waste at home and at school: To reduce food waste at home and school we can just start off with the little things such as, don't scoop to much food on your plate, because when your stomach is full you throw the remaining food away. Try to be a little more aware of this because it could make a big difference.
At school we can reduce the food waste by giving away the leftovers to students or donate it to a food bank. The school can also look at the number of students that are present at the school and look at the average amount of food they buy. With this information the school can buy less products so that the food waste reduces. (Our school already has this implemented, but they do still throw away their food now and then).
Another possibility is to increase the prices. This causes the students to buy less products and the school doesn't have to buy more products. These are just the little things we can improve. Let's make a change together, for a better future!

Comparisons
Our research revolves around when we still had to go to school and some browsing on the internet.
Compared to the Indian school, our research looks weak. They had what we were lacking, Interviews. We did a couple of interviews, but it was nothing compared to what the Indians did. They also had much more information about themselves and their answers to research questions where more thorough.
And the differences of what our research answers are. For example, there answers to reducing food waste at school was to let the students decide what to eat and whenever. What our answer was increasing prices or giving leftovers to students. But we do think the same about why it’s important to save food; Slow down global warming.
The conclusion is that they put more effort into the research than us
